José de San Martín was born on February 25, 1778, in Yapeyú, in the province of Corrientes. In 1812, the Horse Grenadier Regiment was created, named after its founding hero who led it to glory in the War for American Independence.

During his military career, San Martín participated in all the great battles for independence, achieving important victories such as Chacabuco, Maipú, San Lorenzo, Nazca, Jauja, Pasco and Riobamba, where he reasserted the ideals of freedom.

One hundred and fifty years after he died, on August 17, 1850, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, the Central Bank issues a circulated coin and a brilliant uncirculated gold coin to honor the Liberator’s memory.

Part of the circulated pieces -5,000- come in cardboard packs with a short biography and the issue specifications. Coins in these packs have a special characteristic -they have a plain edge, whereas the individual ones have a milled edge.
