Justo José de Urquiza was born on October 18, 1801, in a ranch near the city of Concepción del Uruguay, in the province of Entre Ríos. He spent his childhood and early youth in the country, where he learnt to farm the land and raise cattle.

He lived in Concepción del Uruguay from 1819 until his death; there, he devoted to trade and, at the same time, was captivated by politics. One of the main advocates of federalism, he held all the political positions on the scale: representative, head of department, governor of Entre Ríos and first constitutional president of the Argentine Confederation.

His eagerness to organize the nation led him to accept Juan Manuel de Rosas’ resignation to the foreign affairs department on May 1, 1851, and to reassume the autonomy of his province. In 1853 he had the National Constitution passed and strived to unite the Argentine people, fostering well-being and progress.

The Central Bank has minted a circulated coin and a gold brilliant uncirculated coin to commemorate General Urquiza.

Part of the circulated pieces -5,000- come in cardboard packs with a short biography and the issue specifications. Coins in these packs have a special characteristic —they have a plain edge, whereas the individual ones have a milled edge.
