In April 2, 1982, a major Argentine military force landed in
the Malvinas Islands to recover Argentine sovereignty over the islands, because
they belonged to the Argentine national territory. The failure of negotiations
following this episode derived in a military conflict with England, where
officers and noncommissioned officers from all the Argentine Armed Forces fought:
the Army, the Air Force, the Naval Command, the Gendarmerie, and a great number
of conscripts from throughout the country. After severe air, naval, and land
clashes, the armed conflict for the recovery of the islands was ended on June
14, though the claim persisted through diplomatic channels before the various
international agencies.
Twenty-five years later, homage is paid to all the soldiers who heroically
risked and gave their lives for their country by minting, in this first stage(*),
a circulated commemorative coin with the following specifications:
(*) Gold and silver coins will be minted in a second stage.
