On December 13, 1907, a ground drilling machine sent to the newly-founded city of Comodoro Rivadavia, in the Argentine Patagonia, discovered an oil layer while searching for water sources. Immediately after being informed of the finding, the Argentine Government declared the area as an area under its control for hydrocarbon exploitation.

One hundred years after oil was discovered in the Argentine Republic, the Central Bank pays tribute to everyone who made it possible by minting a circulated coin with the following specifications:

OBVERSE DESIGN The center features the picture of the first oil drilling tower surrounded by the years “1907” and “2007,” signaling the centennial of the discovery. Below, the inscription “CDRO. RIVADAVIA.”
The image is encircled above by the inscription “REPÚBLICA ARGENTINA” (“Argentine Republic”) and below by the legend “DESCUBRIMIENTO DEL PETRÓLEO” (“discovery of oil”).
REVERSE DESIGN The center part shows a drilling machine to the left, and the face value (“2”) and the word “PESOS” to the right. The upper part bears the name of the province of “CHUBUT” and the exergue, the year of minting, “2007”.
The coin was designed by Carlos P. Rodríguez Dufour, the BCRA plastic artist.
