To promote the development of economic research and academic activities that contribute to BCRA monetary and financial policy design. To develop models that facilitate an understanding of the Argentine economic dynamics, the projection of variables and the assessment of policy impact. To prepare theoretical and empirical research documents on monetary policy, the banking system, the capital market, the domestic and international real and monetary economy.

Curriculum vitae

Jorge Carrera has been Head of the Economic Research Department since May 2008. He had previously been the Senior Manager of that department. From 2002 to 2005, he worked as a Deputy Head at CEI (Center of International Economy) and as a consultant in macroeconomic issues for several institutions.

He received his PhD in Economics in Rome in 1994. He currently lectures in International Finance at the University of La Plata and in Master’s degree courses at the University of Bologne and the University of Buenos Aires. Before that, he lectured at the University of Pavia (Italy).

His current research work focuses on the theoretical and empirical implications of financial and trade internationalization for emerging economies. In particular, he has studied the real exchange rate determinants for Latin America, the effect of commodity price shocks and the process of reserve accumulation. He has also placed special emphasis on the growth of Mercosur and its implications for various western integration alternatives in the Western Hemisphere.

As representantive of the Central Bank of Argentina, he has conducted studies about the redesigning of the international financial architecture. He is also a technical delegate for G-20 and FSB (Financial Stability Board). He has written over 50 papers and 7 chapters for different books.

He has also published the following books: Coordinación de políticas macroeconómicas en el Mercosur (Coordination of macroeconomic policies in Mercosur), El dilema Mercosur (The Mercosur dilemma), La política económica de la acumulación de reservas: nueva evidencia internacional (The economic policy of reserve accumulation: new international evidence) and Precios de los commodities: Factores estructurales, mercados financieros y dinámica no lineal (Commodity prices: structural factors, financial markets and non- lineal dynamics).
